The UdL is one of the few Universities in Spain that combines excellent research in agricultural sciences and biomedicine. It is engaged in high level teaching and research at the undergraduate and graduate levels with a highly specialized degree dedicated to Biotechnology. The expertise of the School of Agronomy in particular encompasses plant molecular biology, plant physiology and biochemistry, plant genetics and crop production.

Key people

Prof Paul Christou holds an ICREA Research Professorship endowed by the Catalan Government. In the field of transgenic plants since 1982, he and has published over 250 peer-reviewed papers and in is an inventor on 12 issued patents on the development of transformation systems for recalcitrant plants for agronomic and value-added traits encompassing crops and medicinal plants; he has been investigating mechanistic aspects of multiple transgene integration and expression in plants and the engineering of complex biochemical pathways leading to the creation of plants accumulating high value recombinant pharmaceuticals; recently he has initiated projects on genome editing in rice and maize through CRISPR/Cas9. He has expertise in Intellectual Property protection and developing country issues in the context of funded projects from The Rockefeller and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and biosafety, as a member of the ad hoc committee on molecular farming at EFSA. He was the PI on the ERC Advanced Grant BioForce and the ERC PoC Grant Multinutrient maize. He has been involved in 7 EU projects over the past 20 years.

Prof Teresa Capell has over 20 years’ experience in metabolic pathway engineering focusing on the development of an in depth understanding of molecular/biochemical mechanisms involved in reconstituted biosynthetic pathways in plants and also the development of multi-gene transfer systems for target species. She has been involved in fou EU projects and she is currently being funded by the Spanish Ministry on a molecular pharming project on combination microbicides against HIV. She has been the PI of on 3 past previous National projects.
